How to find hardness in your water quality report

Community water systems publish an annual water quality report, also called a Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). It's free, and it's the first place to look.

Finding it

Finding hardness inside it

Hardness isn't listed?

That's common. CCRs mainly report regulated contaminants, and hardness is a nuisance property rather than a health standard (USGS). For example, the City of Youngstown, Ohio's 2025 water quality report (PDF) mentions calcium carbonate scale but doesn't give a hardness figure. That report says a complete list of results is available on request. When the report has no number:

  1. Call or email your utility and ask for total hardness as CaCO3.
  2. Or test your own tap. EPA suggests a professional test as one option.

Once you have the number, go to the decision guide.
